About the Joanna Briggs Foundation

The Joanna Briggs Foundation (JBF) is the fundraising and advocacy arm of the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). At the heart of our efforts is our focus on empowering individuals and communities through evidence-based healthcare. The Foundation’s Patron is the Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, His Excellency, General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove AK MC (Rtd).
Funding from the Foundation enables health professionals from remote and low-resource settings in Australia and low income countries worldwide to travel to Adelaide and participate in the Evidence- based Clinical Fellowship Program. The six-month Evidence-based Clinical Fellowship Program is tailored for each participant and provides the framework for key medical staff from low-resource settings to learn and use JBI methodologies and approaches for getting evidence into practice.
In addition to participating in two week-long intensive training workshops, the participants are supported individually by JBI staff to implement an evidence-based project to improve health outcomes in their local communities. In this way, JBI works towards its vision of a world in which the best available evidence is used to inform decision making at the point of care to improve healthcare in communities globally.

December 2018

Nine outstanding health professionals from Cameroon, Kenya, Malawi and Papua New Guinea recently presented the results of their evidence- based implementation projects to improve health outcomes in their local communities. The visiting health professionals led the projects as part of the Joanna Briggs Foundation Evidence-based Clinical Fellowship Program.

The projects included improving treatment outcomes for HIV positive adolescents; investigating newborn resuscitation and prevention of neonatal asphyxia; enhancing the management of severe anaemia in children; and managing Sickle Cell Disease.
Sponsors of the Joanna Briggs Foundation, including Trility's Caroline Kerkhof, attended the presentations to meet the Fellows and hear how their organisations have helped change lives by sponsoring the development of leaders who are now equipped to use evidence to improve healthcare in global communities.

October 2018

His Excellency General the Honourable Sir Peter Cosgrove, AK, MC (Retd), Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia, and Her Excellency Lady Cosgrove, hosted a reception at Admiralty House, Sydney, in recognition of the work of the Joanna Briggs Institute in improving health outcomes for disadvantaged communities.

The Governor-General, who has been Patron of the Joanna Briggs Foundation for four years, gave an impassioned speech about the need for evidence-based healthcare and praised the work of JBI in changing lives and fulfilling a critical role of assisting health professionals from around the world to become effective clinical leaders in their communities.
Attending the reception on 12 October were Rear Admiral The Hon Kevin Scarce Ac Csc Ran- Rtd, Chancellor of the University of Adelaide; Mr Sumasy Singin, Consul General of Papua New Guinea; Mr Sossy Msomi, Honorary Consul of Tanzania; and donors and supporters of the Joanna Briggs Foundation.

December 2017

In 2017 funding raised by the JBF sponsored eight health professionals of outstanding merit from low-resource settings to participate in the Evidence-based Clinical Fellowship Program in Adelaide to work closely with JBI staff. The eight participants represented Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Myanmar, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria and Nepal.

Evidence-based projects implemented by the eight participants included Implementing Evidence-based Postnatal Care for Women and Newborns in the remote highlights of Papua New Guinea; Tuberculosis Contact Prevention among Children in Indonesia; and Best Practice in the Management of Postpartum Haemorrhage in Kenya.
These projects were presented by each participant at the end of the six-month program during a presentation day attended by academics, students, clinicians and supporters of the Joanna Briggs Foundation.

October 2017

The Joanna Briggs Foundation hosted Adelaide’s Premier Business Luncheon for 2017 on 6 October. Key speaker was the Hon Julie Bishop MP, Minister for Foreign Affairs in Australia’s Federal Coalition Government.

Hon Simon Birmingham, Minister for Training and Education also attended the luncheon as guest speaker. Both Hon Julie Bishop MP and Hon Simon Birmingham networked and dined with guests.
The 300 guests at the iconic Adelaide Oval represented the “who’s who” in business and politics. Major sponsors of the event were ASC/Austal, BAE and Wirra Wirra Wines.

June 2017

The Joanna Briggs Foundation funds health improvement programs within indigenous communities in Australia.

In partnership with the South Australian Health Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (NACCHO), and the University of Adelaide’s School of Public Health, JBI collaborates in the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Centre of Research Excellence in Aboriginal Chronic Disease Knowledge Translation and Exchange (CREATE).
In 2017 funding raised by the JBF sponsored three indigenous health professionals in the Evidence-based Clinical Fellowship Program.

December 2016

In 2016 eleven outstanding health professionals from Kenya, Cameroon, Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal, Tanzania and Ghana were sponsored by the Joanna Briggs Foundation to travel to Adelaide and learn about evidence-based healthcare from JBI staff.

Through their participation in the Evidence-based Clinical Fellowship Program and the individual support from JBI staff, the participants were equipped with the knowledge and skills to conduct clinical audits, and develop and execute strategies to implement evidence-based practice in their local communities.
Evidence-based implementation projects to improve health outcomes in their home countries included Neonatal resuscitation and birth asphyxia in Kenya, Community-based management of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis in Tanzania, and Artemisinin-based combination therapy for uncomplicated malaria in children in Cameroon.
